As you enter into the final stages of your degree program, you will take a comprehensive examination in the ECE430 capstone course. The purpose of this exam is to determine how you are performing compared to other early childhood education students throughout the United States. You will be assessed on your mastery of topics covered throughout your degree program. The academic coursework you have already completed in your program should be sufficient for preparation for this exam. The topics are as follows:

For the final journal, you will think about the above topics and how they are aligned with the main content covered within this course. This course is focused on multicultural and anti-bias issues that support you in developing cultural competence in working with children and families in early childhood settings. With this in mind, describe how you will demonstrate cultural competence in five of the exam topic areas of your choosing. For each chosen topic area, develop a commitment statement that you can use in your future role.

For example:

Learner Development: In order to support language development to meet the individual needs of the children in my classroom, I will use checklists to observe where children need additional assistance. Once I observe each child and document where each individual child needs assistance, I will support him or her one-on-one using developmentally appropriate language and literacy approaches. Some examples include providing a print-rich environment, reading aloud to children as a model of language, developing vocabulary through dual-language exploration, and providing engaging learning experiences in which children can use vocabulary and make meaningful connections across instructional activities.

For this journal activity, be sure to select five topics to develop. Consider how you would apply these principles and construct your 250-300 word journal entry using critical thinking. Cultural Competence Sharing and Reflection. 1st Post Due by Day 3. Throughout this course you have learned about concepts that contribute to the creation of a culturally responsive environment and support the learning and development of all children and their families. You now have an ePortfolio that demonstrates this learning. This final discussion has two required parts:

You will finalize your ePortfolio by adding a Resource tab including all the scholarly resources that you have included in your assignments. The final Resources tab should be submitted in APA format and include the 10 scholarly resources that you have used to support your ideas in your assignments. After you finalize your ePortfolio, you will share the link to your completed Cultural Competence Google site ePortfolio. This is your opportunity to share with others your compilation of ideas, beliefs, and strategies to meet the needs of all your children and families.

In addition to sharing your ePortfolio link, you will reflect on your ePortfolio by summarizing the main concepts and why they are important to you as an educator. The four main themes are:

You will finalize the literature review by incorporating two additional scholarly sources into your paper that highlight the necessity of designing a classroom to meet the needs of diverse learners. The finalized literature review must include the scholarly sources submitted in Weeks Two through Four as well as the two additional scholarly sources you select in Week Five.

Your literature review must include the following:

An introduction that provides the reader with an understanding of what research has been completed andwhy the topic under investigation is important to early childhood education.

An explanation of the common ideas or themes in the scholarly sources that you have found.

An analysis of what you have learned based your research.

An analysis and discussion of how the research findings translate into real-world classroom application.

A summary of the information and an explanation of how the information from these articles will impactyou in your career.

An explanation of how your chosen topic is connected to the other themes that make up overall cultural competence.

Access to High-Quality Programs. 1st Post Due by Day 3. Children’s access to high quality programs in the United States is influenced by the state in which they live. For this discussion, you will visit the Children’s Defense Fund website and access the Children in the States Factsheet for your state and another state of your choosing. Review the fact sheet for your state and another state of your choosing. Find data for the following:

Number of children served by Head Start.

Average annual cost of child care for a 4-year-old in a center.

Percent of 3-year-olds enrolled in state Pre-K, Head Start, or special education programs.

Percent of 4-year-olds enrolled in state Pre-K, Head Start, or special education programs.

Number of poor children (and percent poor).

You will then create a graphic representation (e.g., chart, table, or graph) that clearly shows the differences in these statistics between your state and the other state you chose. You are encouraged to use “chart,” “table,” or “smart art” features in Word to create your graphic. You may also use Excel. An example is included here:

After uploading your graphic into the discussion, address the following:

Analyze your findings and determine if the children in your state are receiving appropriate childcare

services relative to the children in the other state. Justify your analysis by providing a comparison between the funding, percentage of students served, and percentage of identified poor children based on the data for the two states.

Provide two to three specific recommendations for families to access quality childcare in your community. Also, locate two organizations that can aid families in identifying quality care.

Teachers can be genuine in their efforts to design and provide a culturally relevant and anti-bias classroom, but they can still fail to foster an environment  in which children are fully inclusive of others and free of prejudice.

Our classrooms are filled with children and families from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Imagine you are an early childhood educator who has received the surveys noted below from your families. After you read through the surveys (available in your online course), select one family that you want to use for this discussion.

Write a transcript for a parent-teacher conference that you might have with this family based on facts you learned about them from the survey. Develop five questions that the parent/family member might ask you about your classroom during a conference. Each question should include a fact from the survey. For example, a family might ask you, “What resources are available to help my child learn English?” or “How can I help support my child at home since I work during the day?”

Then, develop responses to address their questions. Be sure to include a specific example of how you will do this in the classroom and provide support from the textbook. Your discussion will be submitted in question-and- answer format and will include the following for each of the five questions:

Question asked by parent using a fact from the survey

Response to the question

Explanation of your answer

Specific example of how this will occur in your classroom

Evidence from the textbook that supports this answer

One website for each question that could serve as a resource for you as an educator or a website
